Looking for Something to Do? Free Events June 2 to 8

Here are events scheduled Saturday, June 2, to Friday, June 8.

All events are free, so take a look -- and don't you dare say there's nothing to do in Pasadena!


Bring the kids for Nature Tails Storybook Time featuring books about animals and nature Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Corner inside the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. Nature Tails are scheduled every Saturday morning.

Meet 62 Pasadena and Altadena artists in 28 locations who will open their work spaces to visitors of all ages during the annual Open Studios Tour Saturday, June 2, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 3, from noon to 6 p.m. These are not gallery shows, but an opportunity to experience an intimate view into the artists' lives and studios and how their creative ideas are conceived and developed. Mediums include painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, mixed media, jewelry, textiles and assemblage.

EVENT NAVIGATIO

KCRW will kick off its ninth season of Summer Nights at One Colorado Saturday June 2, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. with a live concert by Pinky Pinky. KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox will open and close the evening with sets of some of his favorite tracks.

The annual Happy Birthday Pasadena festival, with the theme Wish Upon a Star, is Sunday, June 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Pasadena Museum of History. Pasadena's 132nd birthday will be celebrated with robots and stormtroopers in keeping with the current exhibition Dreaming the Universe: The Intersection of Science, Fiction & Southern California; music by Gypsy Jambo!, face painting, activities for adults and children, and much more. Oh, and of course, plenty of birthday cake!


Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to read books to gentle, well-trained dogs at Barks and Books Monday, June 4, at 1 p.m. at San Rafael Branch Library and/or 3 p.m. at La Pintoresca Branch Library.


Children ages 9 to 12 are invited to map their neighborhoods while exploring Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Monday and Tuesday, June 4 and 5, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the fourth floor at Central Library. Where are the best playgrounds? Which streets are the cleanest? Where are the best bike paths? Call (626) 744-4210 to sign up for this two-day Around My Neighborhood workshop.


Twinkle Time will perform for young children Tuesday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Garfield Promenade on the street level at Paseo Colorado.

Tuesday Musicale presents its final concert of the season Tuesday, June 5, at 12:30 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. The program will include a Johannes Brahms string quartet, a Benedetto Marcello cello sonata, and duos for two voices.


Children will love the Buster Balloon Show with its wild and wacky mix of comedy, magic and twisted balloon creations Tuesday, June 5, at 3:30 p.m. at Lamanda Park Branch Library.

The first Tuesday of every month is Free Family Night at Kidspace Children's Museum. On Tuesday, June 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. children will make art out of items that might otherwise have been thrown away, create posters to communicate how we can take action to care for the Earth, and learn about plants that help save water in California.

The Belrose Duo (cellist David Garrett and pianist Junko Ueno Garrett) will perform classical works Wednesday, June 6, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. as part of the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.


Families with children will make Japanese carp kites and watch them fly Thursday, June 7, at 3:30 p.m. at Hill Avenue Branch Library.

Olympian to Olympian: In Conversation with Lauren Gibbs and John Naber Friday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to noon in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center is free and open to the public regardless of age or membership status. A reception will follow. Gibbs, a member of the USA Women's Bobsled Team that won the Silver Medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, just 7/100ths of one second behind the Gold Medal winners, will be joined in conversation by John Naber, the swimming champion who won four gold medals and one silver medal and set four new world records at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. 

"Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool" (2017, R) starring Annette Benning and Jamie Bell will be shown Friday, June 8, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. A young actor starts up an affair with a famous older Hollywood actress in 1978 Liverpool where their passion and lust for life is tested to the limits by events beyond their control. The film is based on fact. You do NOT have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend, but you must be 50 or older.

Former NFL players Marcus Robertson and Chad Brown, who are John Muir High School alumni, will lead a youth football clinic Saturday, June 9, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Rose Bowl Stadium for children ages 6 to 13 with drills, obstacle course, skill lessons and challenges matches. Lunch will be provided for all participants. Be sure to make reservations for your children right now! The clinic is open only to the first 300 who register. While the football clinic is happening, anyone older than 14 can attend a yoga class from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and two high-intensity interval training (HIIT) classes from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:40 to 11:25 a.m. Registration is at the same site as the football clinic.


In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Pasadena Playhouse will host a community celebration of arts and culture with a block party on El Molino Avenue at Colorado Boulevard Saturday, June 9, from noon to 10 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature live music, food, guided tours, kids' zone, interactive art and more.


The summer reading program for children, teens and adults, with the theme Reading Takes You Everywhere, will kick off Saturday, June 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. with a musical journey around the world in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Theatre Americana invites you to pack your proverbial bags, suntan lotion and sunglasses as you're spirited away to the Rockies, the deep South, tropical islands and romantic cities, all featured in great novels. There will be games and prizes for the kids.
