The feature-length documentary Bungalow Heaven: Preserving a Neighborhood will be screened Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Santa Catalina Branch Library. The film takes viewers through the historic neighborhood and inside homes, hears from residents and reveals the hard-fought struggle to preserve the past for the future.

• Activities for Pasadena Public Library's Read to the Rhythm summer reading program this week include the following (and much more):
• For adults: The Sweet Note Quartet will perform jazz Saturday, July 18, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Hastings Branch Library.
• For teens: Make a kawaii doll while listening to music and having fun Saturday, July 18, at 4 p.m. in Studio on 4th at Central Library. All materials will be provided. Call 626-744-7272 to sign up.
• For children: Create your own instrument and make music Thursday, July 23, at 4 p.m. at Hastings Branch Library.

The Hahamongna Walkabout Saturday, July 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. will feature programs that are working to restore and enhance the area as a unique natural treasure with a living river flowing through it.

Movies in the Park presents Brave (2012, PG) with the voice talents of Kelly Macdonald and Billy Connolly Saturday, July 18, at 8 p.m. at Washington Park. Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida must rely on her bravery and archery skills to undo a beastly curse.Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Mariachi Divas will perform Saturday, July 18, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 6:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents Juno (2007, PG-13) starring Ellen Paige and Jason Bateman Saturday, July 18, at 8:30 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, an offbeat young woman makes an unusual decision regarding her unborn child.

The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954, NR) starring Richard Carlson and Julie Adams Saturday, July 18, at 8:30 p.m. at Central Park. Scientists try to capture a strange prehistoric beast lurking in the depths of the Amazon jungle so they can bring it back to civilization for study. Come as early as 7 p.m. for DJ music and food trucks, or bring a picnic.

Sy Berger, Glenn Burke and Steve Bilko will be inducted into the Baseball Reliquary Shrine of the Eternals during a special ceremony Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library.

Open Hands will perform jazz Sunday, July 19, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom (1992, PG) starring Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice Sunday, July 19, at 8:30 p.m. at Central Park. A maverick dancer risks his career by performing an unusual routine and sets out to succeed with a new partner. Come as early as 7 p.m. for DJ music and food trucks, or bring a picnic.

The Susie Hansen Latin Band will perform jazz and Salsa Tuesday, July 21, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the band shell at Memorial Park. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the BBQ snack bar. Sponsored by the Pasadena Senior Center, the concert is open to people of all ages.

Movies in the Park presents Back to the Future (1985, PG) starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd Tuesday, July 21, at 8 p.m. at La Pintoresca Park. A young man is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his scientist friend and must make sure his high-school-age parents unite to save his own existence. 

Honor the courage, determination and joy of Special Olympics athletes worldwide Wednesday, July 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Centennial Square in front of Pasadena City Hall. Officers with the Pasadena Police Department and an international team of law enforcement personnel will carry the Special Olympics Torch from Fair Oaks Avenue at Holly Street to the steps of City Hall. The John Muir High School Drum Corps and Pasadena LEARNS dance teams will provide entertainment.

Guitarist Taro Wayama and violinist David Lee Ruest will perform Wednesday, July 22, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church. Feel free to bring a sack lunch.

The Rescuers (1977, G) with the voice talents of  Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor will be shown on the big screen Wednesday, July 22, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Two mice with the Rescue Aid Society search for a little girl kidnapped by unscrupulous treasure hunters.

The Party Animals will perform for children (and everyone) Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents the Scottish film The Angels' Share (2012) starring Paul Brannigan and John Henshaw Thursday, July 23, at 8:30 p.m. at Armory Center for the Arts. Narrowly avoiding jail, a new dad visits a whisky distillery, which inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives. Winner of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize. A $45 whisky tasting will be offered pre-screening.

The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents The Long, Long Trailer (1953) starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz Friday, July 24, at 8 p.m. at Distant Lands. After a couple is hitched, they spend their honeymoon in a travel trailer and nearly destroy their new marriage as comic disaster ensues.

 

Nina Diaz will perform rock Friday, July 24, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 6:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

Movies in the Park presents Strange Magic (2015, PG) with the voice talents of Evan Rachel Wood and Elijah Kelly Friday, July 24, at 8 p.m. at Villa Parke. Goblins, elves, fairies and imps experience misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion.

The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents the Academy Award-winning film To Kill a Mockingbird starring Gregory Peck and Brock Peters Friday, July 24, at 8:30 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. An attorney and widowed father in the Depression-era South defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge.

• The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents Paper Moon (1973, PG) starring Ryan O'Neal and Tatum O'Neal Saturday, July 11, at 8:30 p.m. at Central Park. When a con artist is unexpectedly saddled with a nine-year-old relative, he teaches her the tricks of the trade. Come as early as 7 p.m. for DJ music and food trucks, or bring a picnic.

• The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents Romeo + Juliet (1996, PG-13) starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes Saturday, July 11, at 8:30 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. The adaptation of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy is updated to modern times in Verona Beach.

• The second Sunday of every month is free admission day at the USC Pacific Asia Museum. On Sunday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. enjoy traditional songs and dances of Nepal in the courtyard, entry to all of the galleries and everything else the museum has to offer.

• The Summer Jazz Series in the Playhouse District kicks off with Grey Beret's smooth jazz Sunday, July 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Vroman's courtyard.

• After sailing across the solar system for more than nine years, NASA's New Horizons unmanned spacecraft will finally have its close encounter with Pluto. Gather with others to hear the news from the spacecraft as it approaches the icy dwarf planet Tuesday, July 14, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Crawford Family Forum at Southern California Public Radio. The Planetary Society's Matt Kaplan will talk with New Horizons scientists, Pluto watchers and Planetary Society brass, and there will be a live webcast with other experts.

• The all-female Mariachi Bella, dressed in traditional costumes, will perform a mix of iconic and new mariachi music Tuesday, July 14, at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. 

• The Little Mermaid (1989, G) with the voice talents of Jodi Benson and Patt Carroll will be shown on the big screen Wednesday, July 15, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Ariel, a mermaid princess, makes a Faustian bargain with an unscrupulous sea witch so she can meet a human prince on land.

• Members of the repertory company at A Noise Within will present a reading of Ronald Harwood's The Dresser Wednesday, July 15, at 7 p.m. The gay personal assistant of a deteriorating actor struggles to get him through a difficult performance of King Lear. RSVPs are required: 626-356-3100.

• The third Thursday (and first Friday) of every month is free admission night at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. On Thursday, July 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. enjoy the exhibitions Someday is Now: The Art of Corita Kent; Alexandra Grant and Steve Roden: These Carnations Defy Language; and everything else the museum has to offer.

• The Funky Punks will perform for children (and everyone) Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

• Showboat (1951, NR) starring Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson will be shown on the big screen Friday, July 17, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. The daughter of a riverboat captain falls in love with a charming gambler, but their fairytale romance is threatened when his luck turns sour. You do not have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend.

• Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra will perform jazz Friday, July 17, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 6:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

• This month marks the 50th anniversary of Mariner 4, NASA's first unmanned spacecraft to fly to Mars. Scientists were surprised by what the first images revealed, a theme that has continued through a half century of exploring the red planet. The documentary film The Changing Face of Mars will be shown on the big screen Friday, July 17, at 7 p.m. in the Vosloh Forum (building UU on this map) at Pasadena City College with introductory remarks by JPL's Blaine Baggett.

• The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents A Room with a View (1985, NR) starring Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith Friday, July 17, at 8 p.m. at Distant Lands. A young woman in the restrictive and repressed culture of Edwardian-era England falls in love with a free-spirited young man.

• Movies in Park presents Paddington (2014, PG) with the voice talents of Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins Friday, July 17, at 8 p.m. at Villa Parke. A young Peruvian bear travels to London in search of a home and finds himself lost and alone at Paddington Station where he meets a kind family that offers him a temporary haven. Bring a blanket or something else to sit on and feel free to bring a picnic.

• Movies in the Park presents Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012, PG) starring Zachary Gordon and Robert Capron Friday, July 17, at 8 p.m. at Robinson Park. School is out and Greg is ready for the days of summer when all his plans go wrong.

• The Old Pasadena Film Festival presents Galaxy Quest (1999, PG) starring Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver Friday, July 17, at 8:30 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. The alumni cast of a space opera television series must play their roles for real when an alien race needs their help.

Everyone is invited to the Pasadena Museum of History for Happy Birthday Pasadena: Forward Motion! on Sunday, June 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. View fascinating cars, bicycles and other vehicles that were innovative for their time, explore the exhibitions When Johnny Came Marching West: How the Civil War Shaped Pasadena and Thaddeus Lowe: Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army, enjoy live entertainment, refreshments, crafts workshops and children's activities and have a piece of birthday cake (Mayor Tornek will cut the first piece) to mark the 129th year since Pasadena's incorporation as a city.

Legendary jazz singer Barbara Morrison will perform Sunday, June 28, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

Science humorist Dave Zobel will host a multimedia presentation about the popular CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory Monday, June 29, at 1 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center. You do not have to be a member to attend.

The Pasadena Master Chorale will present the world premiere of Earth Speaks by composer in residence Reena Esmail Monday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church. 

Free Adoption Day at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is   Tuesday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adoption fees will be waived for all available animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, pocket pets and reptiles.

Pam Kay and the Tap Chicks will perform lively dance routines and Vaudeville-style comedy in clever costumes Tuesday, June 30, at 6 p.m. in the band shell at Memorial Park. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

Internationally acclaimed classical pianist Michael Sellers will perform Wednesday, July 1, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church. Feel free to bring a sack lunch.

The classic Disney film Johnny Tremain (1957, NR) starring Hal Stalmaster and Luana Patten will be shown on the big screen Wednesday, July 1, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Based on the popular children's book by Esther Hopkins Forbes, 14-year-old Johnny is drawn into the American Revolution and learns about life and himself along the way.

Join in the International Olympic Day celebration Wednesday, July 1, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Crawford Family Forum at Southern California Public Radio. A number of Olympic medalists will speak. Although the event is free, reservations are required.

Rhythm Child will perform interactive reggae, rock and soul for children (and everyone) Thursday, July 2, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park.

Admission to the Pasadena Museum of California Art is free the first Friday (and third Thursday) of every month. On Friday, July 3, from noon to 5 p.m. see the exhibitions "Someday Is Now: The Art of Corita Kent" and "Alexandra Grant and Steve Roden: These Carnations Defy Language" as well as ongoing exhibitions and everything else the museum has to offer.

Into the Woods (2014, PG) starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp will be shown on the big screen Friday, July 3, at 1 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center. You do not have to be a member to attend. A witch tasks a childless baker and his wife with procuring magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse a curse put on their family tree.

The first Friday of every month from 5 to 8 p.m. is Free Admission Night at the Norton Simon Museum. On Friday, July 3, enjoy the current exhibition "Human/Nature: Photographers Constructing the Natural World" and everything else the museum has to offer.  

Take a tour of the Tournament House any Thursday at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. through Aug. 27. Owned by the City of Pasadena, the former Wrigley Estate is home to the Tournament of Roses Association. A docent will lead you through the 18,500-square-foot Italian Renaissance mansion built in 1906. In addition to 21 magnificent rooms, you'll see displays related to Rose Bowl Games, Rose Queens and their Courts and plenty of historic memorabilia from football trophies to tiaras. Then visit the adjacent Wrigley Gardens with 1,500 varieties of roses.

Drop by both days to see all the works in progress, vote for your favorites, enjoy live music, take the children to Kids Zone to create their own masterpieces, check out the classics at the Pasadena Police Department's Classic Car Show (Sunday only) and much more. (And yours truly will be the emcee on the main stage.)

Enjoy a performance by the Los Angeles Children's Chorus concert choir ensemble Saturday, June 20, at 7 p.m. at Pasadena Presbyterian Church before they head off on an international tour.

Cayucas will perform their sun-drenched, jangly pop Saturday, June 20, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado.

Two medical pioneers -- one a celebrated heart surgeon and the other an overlooked lab assistant -- change history in the 1940s when they perfect "blue baby" surgery for infants with heart defects. Based on a true story.

Pasadena Public Library's "Read to the Rhythm" Summer Reading Challenge for children up to age 12, teens entering grades 7 to 12 and adults begins Saturday, June 13, and continues through Aug. 8. It offers plenty of special events, programs and prizes for all ages! Registering is easy online (click on Adult, Teen or Children) or at your nearest library. • For adults: Of Thee I Sing: The Magna Carta @ 800 Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at Allendale Branch Library will feature folk singer Ross Altman as he presents songs and stories about milestones in liberty and justice for all. Enjoy his renditions of classics by Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson, Lead Belly, Paul Ochs, Joan Baez and more.

Admission to the Pasadena Museum of California Art is free the third Thursday (and first Friday) of every month. On Thursday, June 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. see the new exhibitions "Someday Is Now: The Art of Corita Kent" and "Alexandra Grant and Steve Roden: These Carnations Defy Language" as well as ongoing exhibitions and everything else the museum has to offer.

"The Theory of Everything" (2014, PG-13) starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones will be shown on the big screen Friday, June 19, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. The film is based on the true relationship experiences of renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane as he embarks on his groundbreaking study of what he has little of -- time. You do not have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend.

Acceptable items include motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, household batteries, brake fluid, paint thinner, cleaners with acid or lye, pesticides, herbicides, expired pharmaceuticals, fluorescent light bulbs and more. The drought is wreaking havoc on many lawns and gardens. Learn how to water your gardens and landscaping to keep them healthy during a drought Saturday, June 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Hill Avenue Branch Library.

The annual Make Music Pasadena will feature more than 100 concerts rotating on stages in Old Pasadena, the Playhouse District, Memorial Park, Central Library and Paseo Colorado Saturday, June 6, from noon to 9 p.m. with genres including rock, jazz, blues, pop, R&B, Afro-Caribbean, folk, electronic, classical and more. And the festival will include the Pasadena Symphony and Pops Music Under the Stars concert in front of City Hall -- their annual gift to the community.

KCRW's Summer Nights concert series in the courtyard at One Colorado kicks off with De Lux's synth-driven, feel-good disco, funk and post-funk Saturday, June 6, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Do you know musical instruments vibrate in fractions? Or that when it comes to length, shorter instruments sound higher and longer instruments sound lower? Children will learn about the math and science behind musical instruments and then make their own Monday, June 8, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Central Library. Call 626-744-7262 to sign up.

"Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" (2009, NR) starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kimberly Elise will be shown Wednesday, June 10, at 1 p.m. on the big screen in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Ben Carson rose from a poor, inner-city childhood to become one of the world's greatest neurosurgeons. Based on a true story.

Pete Morris traveled on a medical mission to Guatemala with Mending Kids International and documented through sketches and watercolors the work of doctors and volunteers and the children and families they serve. An opening reception for his works Thursday, June 11, at 5 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center will include wine and cheese, and Morris will discuss his works. The art will be on display through the end of June. You do not have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center or even a senior to attend.

"Mr. Turner" (2014, R) starring Timothy Spall and Paul Jesson will be shown on the big screen Friday, June 12, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. The film explores the last quarter century of the great, eccentric English painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). You do not have to be a member of the Senior Center to attend.
