Looking for Something to Do? Free Events May 7 to 13


Here are events scheduled Saturday, May 7, to Friday, May 13.

All events are free, so take a look -- and don't you dare say there's nothing to do in Pasadena!  

"Pilot Error" (2014, NR) starring Kate Thomsen and Robert Cicchini will be shown Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. An investigative reporter looks into why an Air Paris jet disappeared over the Atlantic. The film is inspired by a true story. After the screening, Cpt. Shem Malmquist, a veteran airline pilot and accident investigator, will speak to the audience.

Saturday, May 7, is Free Comic Book Day! Children, teens and adults can pick up free comic books at Central Library or any branch library during regular hours while supplies last. There will also be special comics-related programs at each library.  

Caltech's 36th annual Bandorama Saturday, May 7, at 8 p.m. at Ramo Auditorium (inside building #77 on this map) will feature the Caltech Jazz Band performing works by Pat Williams, Tom Kubis Magali Souriau, Paquito D'Rivera and more; and the Caltech-Occidental Concert Band performing works by Les Deutch, Percy Grainger, John Philip Sousa, Jack Stamp and Frank Ticheli.

The second Sunday of every month is Free Admission Day at USC Pacific Asia Museum. On Sunday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. enjoy Royal Taste: The Art of Princely Courts in Fifteenth Century China and all the other current exhibitions as well as Silk Road Story Time at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and Spotlight Tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

 
The Caltech Chamber Music Ensembles will perform sonatas by Corelli and Mancini, Dvořák's Piano Quintet and several selections for flute Sunday, May 8, at 3:30 p.m. in Dabney Lounge at Dabney Hall (#40 on this map).

 
Children ages 5 to 8 are invited to bring their imaginations to Creative Writing for Beginning Readers Tuesday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m. in the Story Room at Central Library.

The Belrose Duo (Junko Ueno Garrett and David Garrett) will perform classical works Wednesday, May 11, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

"Chef" (2014, R) starring Jon Favreau and Scarlett Johanssen will be shown Wednesday, May 11, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. A chef walks away from a prominent restaurant after differences with the owner and starts up a food truck to reclaim his creative promise while bringing his estranged family back together. 

"Brooklyn" (2015, PG-13) starring Saoirse Ronan and Emory Cohen will be shown Friday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center. An Irish immigrant arrives in 1950s Brooklyn where she falls into a romance with a local man, then must choose between two countries. You don't have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend. 

Sounds on South Lake presents the Nick Valentini Collective featuring a fusion of indie rock, jazz and psychedelic soul plus Salt Petal performing Argentinian folk, Brazilian tropicala, Cumbia and up-tempo rock Friday, May 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 345 S. Lake Ave. (patio next to Corner Bakery).

The Pasadena Community Orchestra will perform Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene. Featured works will include Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Dvořák's Czech Suite Op. 39 and Prokofiev's Concerto No. 1.

Centennial Square in front of Pasadena City Hall will be transformed into an outdoor concert space Saturday, May 14, at 8 p.m. for Music Under the Stars, the annual gift to the community from the Pasadena Symphony and Pops. The orchestras will be joined by special guest stars Dale Kristien, Norman Large and Katherine Strohmaier plus the JPL Chorus for a celebration of music from Broadway, the movies and the Great American Songbook. Come as early as 6 p.m., bring a lawn chair and a picnic dinner or purchase dinner onsite.  

 
The Pasadena Museum of History and The Gamble House will be among six venues offering free admission on Museums of the Arroyo Day Sunday, May 15, during regular hours. 

 
The Crown City Symphony will perform a special concert in memory of cofounder Cynthia Rosedale Sunday, May 15, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Pasadena featuring Burkart's elegy, Mendelssohn's Concert for Violin and  Dvořák's Symphony No. 8.
