Looking for Something to Do? Free Events March 31 to April 6


Here are events scheduled Saturday, March 31, to Friday, April 6.

All events are free, so take a look -- and don't you dare say there's nothing to do in Pasadena!

Visit more than 50 science activities at interactive booths and learning stations, hear TED-style science talks ranging from Beetles That Hypnotize Ants to NASA's Mars 2020 Mission, see robots and JPL's inflatable rover and more during Caltech's Science Open House Saturday, March 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Beckman Mall (the green space between buildings 76 and 77 on this map). All ages are welcome. All campus parking structures are free on weekends. While the event is free, registration is requested

The Spring Egg Bowl and Festival at the Rose Bowl Stadium Saturday, March 31, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will feature Pasadena's largest Easter egg hunt, live entertainment, arts and crafts, games, a puppet show and more for children ages 0 to 12. Don't forget your basket! 

Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to read books to gentle, well-trained dogs at Barks and Books Monday, April 2, at 1 p.m. at San Rafael Branch Library.

Rhythm Child will perform for kids of all ages Tuesday, April 3, from 10 a.m. to noon in the open-air Garfield Promenade on the street level at Paseo Colorado.

Tuesday Musicale presents cellist Kim Ruys de Perez with pianist Jo Ann Haycraft performing Bach and Rachmaninoff, soprano Ingrid Helge singing arias by Puccini, Mozart and Satie, pianist Jamie Caridi performing Beethoven's Sonata #26 and soprano Maria del Pilar Gomez (pictured above) and mezzo-soprano Ruth Ridenour singing arias and duets by Monteverdi, Mozart, Offenbach and Rossini Tuesday, April 3, at 12:30 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library.

The first Tuesday of every month is Free Family Night at Kidspace Children's Museum. On Tuesday, April 3, from 4 to 8 p.m. discover how science is explored and communicated with art. Don't miss a special performance on a theremin at 6 p.m. in the Stone Hollow Amphitheater.

Get a team together to dig deep into your knowledge of pop culture and beyond during Trivia Night Tuesday, April 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. While the event is free,  
registration is required so they'll know how many teams to expect.

"Rebecca" (1940, NR) starring Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier will be shown Wednesday, April 4, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. The second Mrs. Maxim de Winter accompanies her new husband to his vast English estate and is met with hostility by the servants who adored Rebecca, the first Mrs. de Winter, whose death is shrouded in secrets.

Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to a special STEAM program Thursday, April 5, from 4 to 5 p.m., at Hastings Branch Library where they'll learn all about the science behind music

Guest artists will explore the human body -- the original musical instrument -- harnessing heart rhythms through listening and seeing harmonies, body percussion and movement Friday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center. While the event is free, RSVPs are required by calling (626) 795-4331. You do NOT have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend, but you do have to be 50 or older. All participants will receive complimentary tickets to MUSE/IQUE's HUMAN/INSTRUMENT concert led by artistic director Rachael Worby Sunday, April 8, at 5 p.m.  

The first Friday (and third Thursday) of every month is Free Admission Day at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. On Friday, April 6, from noon to 5 p.m. enjoy the current exhibitions Testament of the Spirit: Paintings by Edward Carrillo, The Feminine Sublime and Ana Serrano: Homegrown plus everything else the museum has to offer.

"Murder on the Orient Exress" (2017, PG-13) starring Kenneth Branagh and Penélope Cruz will be shown Friday, April 6, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. Thirteen strangers are stranded on a lavish European train and everyone is a suspect as the celebrated detective Hercule Poirot races against time to solve the mystery before the murderer strikes again. You do NOT have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend, but you do have to be 50 or older.

The first Friday of every month is Free Admission Day at the Norton Simon Museum. On Friday, April 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. enjoy the current exhibitions Taking Shape: Degas as Sculptor and In Search of New Markets: Craft Traditions in Nineteenth Century India plus everything else the museum has to offer.

Looking for Something to Do? Free Events March 24 to 30

Here are free events scheduled Saturday, March 24, to Friday, March 30.

March is One City, One Story month -- our community reading celebration! Have you read this year's selection "Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, From Missiles to the Moon to Mars" by Nathalia Holt yet? Here are some related events for the upcoming week:
Dr. John Mulchaey, director of the Carnegie Observatories, will speak about the history and accomplishments of the renowned institution Saturday, March 24, at 11 a.m. at Linda Vista Branch Library

Tweens and teens ages 9 to 19 will explore the basics of acting for film and TV, how to break down a script, prepare for an audition and create believable characters Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Hill Avenue Branch Library. Previous experience is not required.

Kinderwise will perform a special spring program for children of all ages Tuesday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to noon in the open-air Garfield Promenade on the street level at Paseo Colorado.

After a kid-friendly exhibition tour of of Testament of the Spirit: Paintings by Eduardo Carrillo, young children ages 2 to 5 will assemble colorful collages of paper chili peppers and enjoy a reading of "Green is a Chile Pepper" Wednesday, March 28, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. as part of the ongoing Free Fourth Wednesday Wee Read series.

Classical guitarist Michael Gratovich will perform Wednesday, March 28, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

The third Thursday (and first Friday) of every month is Free Admission Day at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. On Thursday, March 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. enjoy the current exhibitions and everything else the museum has to offer.

"Good Night, and Good Luck" (2005, PG) starring David Strathairn and George Clooney will be shown Friday, March 30, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. In the mid-'50s, broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow and his producer help bring an end to the Hollywood blacklist and the House Un-American Activities Committee's hearings led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, defying obstacles in their relentless pursuit of the truth. You do NOT have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend.

Looking for Something to Do? Free Events March 17 to 23


Here are events scheduled March 17 to 23 in Pasadena.

Cleary Irish Dance will perform traditional dances followed by an interactive dance lesson during which the audience will be taught a jig or two Saturday, March 17, from 11 a.m. to noon in the courtyard at One Colorado. While this event is free, registration is required.

Children will create their own rainbow necklaces accented with sparkly shamrock amulets to show their St. Paddy's Day spirit Saturday, March 17, from noon to 5:30 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. All materials will be provided. RSVPs are encouraged

The Third@First concert series presents Music of Leonard Bernstein Saturday, March 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in commemoration of his 100th birthday celebration, featuring instrumental and voice soloists and the Chancel Choir. The program will include selections from "West Side Story" and "The Chichester Psalms" plus three meditations from "Mass." 

The Girsky Quartet will host a 4 p.m. master class and perform at a 7 p.m. recital Saturday, March 17, in Barrett Hall at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music


Dressed in kilts, Glengarry blacks and other regalia, the internationally renowned Pasadena Scots will perform on bagpipes and drums Saturday, March 17, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. RSVPs are recommended.


The Crown City Symphony will perform Franz Schubert's "Overture to Rosamunde, D 644 (Op. 26), Ernest Chausson's "Poèmme" and César Franck's "Redemption from Morceau Symphonique FWV 52 (Op. 22) Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Pasadena.


The Pasadena Conservatory of Music's piano department will host festival recitals celebrating composers Frederic Chopin, Robert Schumann and Cornelius Gurlitt Sunday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the conservatory auditorium.


Classical violist and violinist Jing Yang will perform Wednesday, March 21, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.


PBS's "American Experience: Rachel Carson" (2017, TV-PG) featuring a profile of the renowned biologist and conservationist will be shown Wednesday, March 21, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Rachel Carson's award-winning 1962 book "Silent Spring" helped launch the modern environmental movement.


Sure and begorrah, you'll enjoy toe-tapping Celtic music performed by the Reel Folk Ensemble featuring Irish step dancer Patty McCollum Thursday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m. at the Santa Catalina Branch Library

  • Tracy Drain (in photo above), a flight systems engineer and a key part of development and mission operations at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will speak about the trajectory that took her from very humble beginnings to her integral roles in the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission and the Juno mission to Jupiter Thursday, March 22, at 7 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Bring your daughters (and the rest of the family, or just yourself) for an inspiring discussion and Q&A.


Students in grades 6 to 12 from 150 schools will showcase their inspiring investigative skills and creativity to compete for medals, special awards and scholarships during the Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair Friday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pasadena Convention Center. Chat it up with some of these students and catch some of the enthusiasm they have for their research and projects.

JPL's Cassini mission team steered the spacecraft into unexplored space during its 13-year trek until they intentionally plummeted it into Saturn, its final destination. Erick Sturm, planning lead for the Cassini mission, will present a program titled "Planning Cassini's Grand Finale: A Retrospective" Friday, March 23, at 7 p.m. in the Vosloh Forum at Pasadena City College (Building UU on this map).

Looking for Something To Do? Free Events March 3 to 9

Enjoy free food, interactive games and much more at the Jump Into Summer fair Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Central Park where you'll learn about fun, free and low-cost activities and programs planned this summer by the City of Pasadena for children, teens, adults and families, including summer day camps, aquatics, wellness programs, computer labs, concerts, game days, movie nights, martial arts, sports, STEAM activities, book discussions, arts and crafts, creative writing experiences, summer reading programs and more.

Opening day for the new exhibition Dreaming the Universe: The Intersection of Science, Fiction & Southern California Saturday, March 3, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Pasadena Museum of History is free and open to the public. Explore the history of science fiction in Southern California from the 1930s to the 1980s and how it interacted with advances in science, changes in technology and shifts in American society. Kids will create their own space vehicles from 1 to 4 p.m.

Tuesday Musicale of Pasadena presents a recital with solo pianist Priscella Yam, cellist Nancy Friedmann, pianist Agatha Hou, mezzo-soprano Marina Battifora and more Tuesday, March 6, at 12:30 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library.

"America's Got Talent" auditions will be taped Tuesday, March 6, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, at 3 and 7 p.m. and Thursday, March 8, at 3 and 7 p.m. at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Be part of the audience! You'll see host Tyra Banks and celebrity judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Simon Cowell as they review a large number of acts. While tapings are free, tickets are required.

Free Family Night at Kidspace Children's Museum is Tuesday, March 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. Springtime will be celebrated with arts and culture from around the world throughout the afternoon and evening. At 6 p.m., be sure to dance to the music of Bollywood, followed by a Holi Festival color show. 

Classical guitarist Hugo Maia Nogueira will perform Wednesday, March 7, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

"Madame Curie" (1943, NR) starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon will be shown Wednesday, March 7, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. Polish-born Marie is an impoverished student living in Paris when she meets a meek scientist, Pierre Curie, who begins working side by side with her in her discovery of radium. The film is based on fact.

Children ages 5 to 12 will reuse and recycle items to create Recycled Robots using cardboard, bottle caps, wood and tubes Thursday, March 8, at 3:30 p.m. at Hill Avenue Branch Library.
All materials will be provided.

The next open show of PasadenaPhotographicArts is scheduled Thursday, March 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Armory Center for the Arts. From students to award-winning professionals, photographers will show and discuss their projects.

"Loving Vincent" (2017, PG-13) with the voice talents of Douglas Booth and Jerome Flynn will be shown Friday, March 9, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. Animated in an oil painting style, the film depicts a young man who travels to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends of investigating van Gogh's final days there. You do not have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend.

Enjoy an evening of art, music, dance, drama and more when ArtNight Pasadena returns Friday, March 9, from 6 to 10 p.m. Nearly 20 of Pasadena's most prominent arts and cultural institutions will open their doors for free! Hop on/hop off shuttles at every venue will take you door to door, or you can drive, ride your bike or amble at your own speed. Here's the lineup of venues:
