Looking for Something to Do? Free Events July 2 to 8

Here are events scheduled Saturday, July 2, to Friday, July 8.

All events are free, so take a look -- and don't you dare say there's nothing to do in Pasadena!


Dustbowl Revival will perform bluegrass, swing and more Saturday, July 2, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. Bring a beach chair and a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. A pre-concert festival will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Bobby Rodriguez will perform Latin jazz Sunday, July 3, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. Bring a beach chair and a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The first Tuesday of every month is Free Family Night at Kidspace Children's Museum. On Tuesday, July 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. celebrate summer with a Teddy Bear Picnic. Bring your own teddy bear or other plush friend and a picnic or purchase a picnic dinner in advance. Don't miss a cultural performance at 6 p.m.

The Concerts in the Park summer series kicks off with Pam Kaye and The Tap Chicks performing lively dance routines and Vaudeville-style comedy Tuesday, July 5, at 6 p,m. in the bandshell at Memorial Park. Bring a beach chair and a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. Sponsored by the Pasadena Senior Center (you do not have to be a member or a senior to attend).


Children will enjoy patriotic fun as they listen to stories about America and create a star-spangled wand Wednesday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at the Pasadena Museum of History. There also will be free admission to the exhibition Flying Horses & Mythical Beasts: The Magical World of Carousel Animals.
Activities for Pasadena Public Library's Read for the Win! Summer Reading Club include the following (and much more!)

  • For children 12 and younger: Learn how animals adapt to their environments using camouflage, eyesight, dentition, movement and defense Wednesday, July 6, at 11:30 a.m. at Hill Avenue Branch Library and the same day at 2:30 p.m. at Villa-Parke Branch Library.
  • For tweens and teens 19 and younger: Design and create PlasTikobots (robot lookalikes) with recycled plastic and other materials Thursday, July 7, at 3 p.m. at Central Library/Teen Central. Call 626-744-4246 or email jgov@cityofpasadena.net to sign up.

Pianist Nancy Fierro will perform Wednesday, July 6, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.


"The Mighty Ducks" (1992, PG) starring Emilio Estevez and Lane Smith will be shown Wednesday, July 6, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. After being pulled over for drunk driving, a self-centered attorney is sentenced to community service coaching a ragtag youth hockey team.

The musical "The Wiz" will be performed Thursday, July 7, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. Bring a beach chair and a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. A pre-musical festival will begin at 5:30 p.m.

"Hail, Caesar!" (2016, PG-13) starring Josh Brolin and George Clooney will be shown Friday, July 8, at 1 p.m. in the Scott Pavilion at the Pasadena Senior Center. A Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works hard to keep a studio's stars in line. You do not have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend.


"Inside Out" (2015, PG) with the voice talents of Amy Poehler and Lewis Black will be shown Friday, July 8, outdoors at Victory Park as soon as the sun sets. After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions -- Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness -- conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. Come as early as 6:30 p.m. and bring beach chairs or blankets and a picnic dinner.


Paseo Colorado's Swingin' Under the Stars summer concert series kicks off  Friday, July 8, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. with The Fabulous Esquires Big Band. Swing dancing lessons will be offered by instructors from the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association from 7 to 7:30 p.m. 


Learn about supercomputer modeling of the universe, then enjoy stargazing through powerful telescopes Friday, July 8, at 8 p.m. at Caltech's Cahill Center for Astonomy and Astrophysics (south side of California Boulevard -- #17 on this map). 

Brightside will perform California roots rock Friday, July 8, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. Bring a beach chair and a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. A pre-concert festival will begin at 6:30 p.m.


Old Pasadena Summer Cinema kicks off Friday, July 8, with (1) "The Darjeeling Limited" (2007, R)   starring Owen Wilson and Adrien Brody at 8 p.m. at Distant Lands. A year after their father's funeral, three brothers travel across India in an attempt to bond with each other. (2) "The Goonies" (1985, PG) starring Sean Astin and Josh Brolin at 8:30 p.m. in the courtyard at One Colorado. To save their home from foreclosure, a group of misfits sets out to find a pirate's ancient treasure.
