Looking for Something to Do? Free Events Aug. 2 to 8

Here are events scheduled Saturday, Aug. 2, to Friday, Aug 8.

All events are free, so take a look -- and don't you dare say there's nothing to do in Pasadena!


Activities for Pasadena Public Library's Summer Reading Challenge include the following (and much more!):
Laith Al-Saadi will perform blues and rock Saturday, Aug. 2, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. A pre-concert festival will begin at 6:30 p.m.


Teens are invited to a Doctor Who party, with themed activities, crafts, snacks, games and giveaways Sunday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Central Library.  Come as your favorite doctor, companion or villain.

The Summer Jazz Series in the Playhouse District continues with DAV Sunday, Aug. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the courtyard outside Vroman's Bookstore


Scott Healy will perform jazz Sunday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park. Bring a picnic or purchase food at the park. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. 


Members of the repertory at A Noise Within will present a reading of Christopher Fry's 1948 Shakespeare-inspired play "The Lady's Not for Burning" Wednesday, Aug, 4, at 7 p.m.  A war-weary soldier wants to die and an accused witch wants to live. RSVPs are required: (626) 356-3100.


Family Free Night at Kidspace Children's Museum is Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. Create clown masks in the commedia dell' arte style and enjoy a performance by a professional clown.


Tom Sullivan's Dixieland Band will bring the New Orleans sound to Memorial Park Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 7 p.m. Bring a picnic or purchase food at the BBQ snack bar.


Steven Niles will perform classical piano Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon recital series.

"Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009, PG) with the voice talents of George Clooney and Meryl Streep will be shown Wednesday, Aug, 6, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. An urbane fox cannot resist returning to his farm-raiding ways, then must help his community survive the farmers' retaliation.


The Super Hero Movie Festival for ages 12 to 18 at La Pintoresca Teen Education Center continues Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 5 p.m. with "The Avengers" (2012, PG-13) starring Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth. Nick Fury of SHIELD assembles a team of superheroes to save the planet from Loki and his army. Popcorn and refreshments will be provided.

The Bob Baker Marionettes will perform for children (and everyone) Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Memorial Park. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. A pre-concert festival will begin at 5:30 p.m.


If you've never been abroad and want to plan that big trip, learn how to get a passport, pack light, travel on a budget and other basics Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Distant Lands. Be sure to RSVP.


Take a tour of the Tournament House Thursday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. Owned by the City of Pasadena, the former Wrigley Estate is home to the Tournament of Roses Association. A docent will lead you through the 18,500-square-foot mansion where you'll see the 21 magnificent rooms plus displays related to Rose Bowl Games, Rose Queens and their courts and plenty of historic memorabilia from football trophies to tiaras. Then visit the adjacent Wrigley Gardens with 1,500 varieties of roses Tours take place every Thursday through Aug. 28 and that's it until next February, so jump at the chance!

"Gravity" (2013, PG-13) starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney will be shown Thursday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Central Library. A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive when a disaster strikes their space shuttle and they are set adrift. 


 
"The Lego Movie" (2014, PG) with the voice talents of Will Arnett and Morgan Freeman will be shown Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7:45 p.m. outdoors in the park at Villa-Parke. An ordinary Lego construction worker joins a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stoppage.


Echocell will perform Armenian synth-pop Thursday, Aug. 7, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park. Bring a picnic or purchase food at the park. A pre-concert festival will begin at 6:30 p.m. Information will be available about the planned Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial.


You don't have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to see the film "Goldfinger" (1964, PG) there in the Scott Pavilion starring Sean Connery and Gert Fröbe Friday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center. While investigating a gold magnate's smuggling, James Bond uncovers a plot to contaminate the Fort Knox gold reserve. Subtitles are included for any viewers with hearing impairments.


"Monsters University" (2013, G) with the voice talents of Billy Crystal and John Goodman will be shown Friday, Aug. 8, at 7:45 p.m. outdoors at Victory Park. Mike and Sulley, Monsters Inc.'s favorite duo, weren't such good friends in college.


"The Lego Movie" will be shown Thursday, Aug. 7, at 8 p.m. outdoors at Paseo Colorado

Ceci Bastida will perform Latin pop Friday, Aug, 8, at 8 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park, including an opening performance by Raquel Sofia. Bring a picnic or purchase dinner at the park. A pre-concert festival featuring Lineage Dance and special activities will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Dive-In Movie Fest at the Villa-Parke Community Center pool continues Friday, Aug 8, at 8 p.m. with "The Nut Job" (2014, PG) with the voice talents of Will Arnett and Liam Neeson. An exiled squirrel finds himself helping his former park brethren raid a nut store to survive, not knowing it is a front for a human's bank robbery.
