You don't have to be a member of the Pasadena Senior Center to see the Academy Award-winning film "12 Years a Slave" (2013, R) starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong'o there Friday, May 2, at 1 p.m.
The Pasadena Earth and Arts Festival returns to Memorial Park and Armory Center for the Arts Saturday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with family-friendly workshops, live music, dance performances, interactive drum circle and much more.
Larry Wilson, Petrea Burchard and Jill Ganon will speak about writing and living in Pasadena during a panel discussion titled Literary Pasadena: Exploring Pasadena in Fiction and Real Life Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m. at Distant Lands. Be sure to RSVP.
Dan Epstein, a noted authority on 1970s baseball and pop culture, will discuss his book "Stars and Strikes: Baseball in America in the Bicentennial Summer of '76" Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Allendale Branch Library. The book is a fun and funky chronicle of the decade's most storied season, detailing the characters, events and cultural forces behind it. If you own a copy, bring it for him to sign!
From Mars to the Stage -- The Pasadena Symphony presents JPL scientists in concert Saturday, May 3, at 8 p.m. at Ambassador Auditorium. The 50-member JPL Chorus will perform "California: Through Their Eyes," a choral celebration featuring music by Benjamin Britten, Aaron Copland and Eric Idol. The JPL Chorus debuted last summer with the Pasadena Pops and Michael Feinstein.
High in Chile's Atacama Desert, construction of the largest telescope ever created is underway. Dr. Wendy Freedman, director of The Carnegie Observatories, will present "The Biggest Eyes on Earth: Building the Giant Magellan Telescope" Monday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. at A Noise Within as part of the observatories' 2014 Astronomy Lecture Series.
With Mothers Day just around the corner, what better way to bring on the nostalgia than by seeing the 1948 film "I Remember Mama" starring Irene Dunne and Barbara Bel Geddes Wednesday, May 7, at 1 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Pasadena Central Library?
Children will delight in folktales from around the world told by award-winning storyteller Laura Simms Tuesday, May 6, at 4 p.m. at Hastings Branch Library.
Do you want to travel and serve communities in need? A representative from the Peace Corps will host a general information session for teens and adults Tuesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium at Pasadena Central Library.
Violinist Paul Stein and pianist Jacqueline Pettito will perform Wednesday, May 7, from 12:10 to 12:14 p.m. for the popular Music at Noon concert series.
LA Opera singers will perform works from the current production of Thaïs Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. at the One Colorado Courtyard, followed by an opera sing-along. The event will repeat at 8 p.m.
